Hatching Butterflies in Early Learners

The children learned about the life cycle of a butterfly and were keen to talk about each stage. We read stories about caterpillars and butterflies. Our favourite was The Hungry Caterpillar!

Each child recieved their own caterpillar and they filled a little pot with food. With a soft brush, they gently scooped the baby caterpillar into the pot, where the caterpillar would grow and grow. During this time, the caterpillars made a cocoon around themselves and the children learned that they were beginning to transform into a butterfly.

After a few weeks, the butterflies began to hatch. The children gave them some sugary water, some flowers and even a slice of orange while they strengthened their wings and got ready to fly.

Our children are so creative that they wanted to make their own caterpillars and butterflies from junk materials. They spent time selecting what they could use and taping, cutting and sticking. We think they did a fantastic job of their representations!
