Our new arrivals

The children were learning about the life cycle of chickens. We had some eggs sent to us from a local farm and Mr Liam set to work setting up the incubator. The chicks spent 21 days in the cosy and warm incubator. We were able to shine a bright light through each shell to see if a chick was developing. This is called egg candling.

We watched as one of our chicks started to hatch from the egg. He was wriggling lots and then took a little break as he was very tired.

Caring for living things is a central part of personal, social and emotional development. The children learn so much about the World Around Us and how we can play a part in showing love.

In nursery, the children helped to feed the chicks and to give them water. We made them a cosy bed under a heat lamp and even gave them cuddles. Baby chicks grow very quickly and they were soon ready to fly the coop. We sent them back to the farm and know that they will have just as much love in their new home as they did in Early Learners.
