Our Themes

Welcome back after the break! We hope you all had a fun Christmas.

Our new topic is:

  • Winter / The Artic and Antarctica / Polar animals

Then moving onto:

  • People Who Help Us (Shop-Keepers)

Aims

Here is a selection of activities and links to our curriculum.

Personal , Social and Emotional Development

  • Transitioning back into the school routine after the Christmas break.

The Arts

  • Artistic learning opportunities will continue to be created through a variation of resources, for example, making snowballs (cookery).

Physical Development and Movement

  • To continue to focus upon fine motor development such as pencil control and scissor skills.

Early Mathematical Experiences 

  • Reinforce shape, size and colour throughout the course of play.
  • The different stages of the freezing and melting of ice.
  • To emphasise the importance using mathematical language through play: heavy, light, heavier, lighter, full, empty.

World Around Us

  • The different habitats in which polar animals live (The Artic and Antarctic).
  • The difference between the Artic and Antarctic (The Artic is at the top of the world and The Antarctic is at the bottom of the world).
  • Who lives in the Artic and Antarctic (Indigenous people such as The Inuit community).
  • The different types of polar animals (Penguin, Artic Hare, Seal, Artic Fox, Polar Bear, Whale, Fish, Snowy Owl, Wolf, Cariobou, Husky).

Language Development

  • To develop knowledge and understanding of the world around them by focusing on language associated with climate and the changes in weather.

Activities

  • Imaginative Play: Tesco Shop: Role play.
  • Art Area: Junk art, Snowmen, Penguins, Winter clothes, Bubble Printing.
  • Dough Area: plain/snowy-blue/natural dough, snowmen, scissors, knives, textured rollers, making patterns, using junk materials such as match sticks and buttons.
  • Sand Tray: Exploring wet/dry sand, making big and small sandcastles, Weighing using scales.
  • Water Tray: Arctic area: ice, polar animals
  • Table Top: Jigsaws, hammer and nails.
  • Outdoor: Exploration of the outdoor environment with a focus upon risk taking.
  • Story Area: Penguins in the Fridge, The Polar Bear and the Snow Cloud, Elmer in the Snow, fact books focused upon our themes.

Charity Donation

A big thank you to all who donated to The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity. Due to your generosity, we were able to raise £1,200!

No Toys From Home

Now that the children have fully settled we would discourage items from home being brought to school. Children become very upset if their belongings are lost or mistakenly taken home by another child. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
